SIECUS Presents New Curricula Reviews!
As part of our Community Advocacy Project, SIECUS reviews and analyzes the content of the most widely used abstinence-only-until-marriage curricula in order to assist parents, educators, students, and advocates who are dealing with these harmful programs in their communities.
This year we reviewed five new or updated curricula in the Choosing the Best series and a new supplemental curriculum from WAIT (Why Am I Tempted) Training. Choosing the Best WAY, PATH, LIFE, JOURNEY, and SOULMATE are produced by the Georgia-based abstinence-only provider of the same name and constitute an extremely popular series designed for grades six through twelve. We also chose to review the WAIT Training 80/20 Manual, which was created to supplement existing abstinence-only-until-marriage programs in areas where legislation or grant requirements specify that sexuality education programs should include information about contraceptives and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The WAIT Training 80/20 Manual was of particular interest because it highlights the trend of abstinence-only-until-marriage providers and lobbyists attempting to re-brand their programs as more mainstream and based in public health.
